COMMEMORATION

Periodical commemorative events

Wanderung

On the occasion of different historical anniversaries, the Borderland Museum commemorates the victims of the division of Germany and of the communist dictatorship in East Germany:

Anniversary of the Border Closure 1952

Each year around May 26th, the day when the GDR started sealing off the inner-German border in 1952, we organize a commemorative. The guided hike starts at Gut Herbigshagen, close to Duderstadt, and leads 9 kilometers along the former border to the Borderland Museum.

Anniversary of the Border Opening 1989

On the evening of November 9th, remembering this meaningful day in German history, the Borderland Museum invites the public to a guided tour along the Borderland Trail. The tour takes place in the evening hours when the trail is partly illuminated by the historical arc lamps built along the border.

The educational center

From canteen to seminar and event location

Bildungstätte Grenzlandmuseum Konzert Schülerprojekt

Few people could imagine that the seminar building where most of our events nowadays take place was built as a canteen for the staff of the East German border crossing point in winter 1989/90.

In 2000 the Borderland Museum was expanded by an educational center, which provides space for lectures, readings, school projects, workshops and panel discussions. All rooms are equipped with modern event technology. The smallest room holds space for up to 25 people, the largest is big enough for 100 people.

The library and large parts of the museum’s archive are also housed in the educational center.
